Net aangekomen in Argentinië wordt de valsspelende gokker Johnny Farrell gered van een moordenaar door de sinistere Ballin Mundson, die Johnny later zijn rechterhand maakt. Hun vriendschap wordt echter verstoord wanneer Mundson terugkeert van een reisje met een echtgenote: de aantrekkelijke Gilda, die Johnny ooit gekend heeft en haat. De relatie tussen Johnny en Gilda wordt nog meer bizar wanneer Mundson verdwijnt.
