Twee zusters die een high school-opleiding volgen in het begin van de jaren '80, worden op een ochtend wakker onder een bloedrode hemel en met het besef dat het menselijke ras uitgeroeid is. Iedereen die niet beschermd was door staal toen de staart van de 'komeet van Halley' voorbijkwam, werd gereduceerd tot een hoopje rode as. Zij ontmoeten een rebelse indiaan en samen proberen zij in een lokaal radiostation via de zendinstallatie hulp te vinden. Jammer genoeg trekken zij de aandacht van een groepje wetenschappers die op de hoogte was van de effecten die de komeet teweeg zou brengen. Zij zaten verborgen in een stalen laboratorium onder de grond, maar ze lieten de ventilatiekanalen open. De overlevenden die slechts gedeeltelijk door staal omringd waren, zijn nu mensenetende levende doden geworden. De wetenschappers proberen nu een vaccin te vinden, maar daarvoor hebben ze het bloed nodig van niet-besmette mensen.
