Walter Burns is hoofdredacteur van de Chicago Morning Post en zit met de handen in het haar. Hij heeft niemand om de terechtstelling van de moordenaar Earl Williams te verslaan. En dan staat plots zijn ex-vrouw en journaliste Hildy Johnson voor hem met het nieuws dat ze ontslag neemt en gaat trouwen met de verzekeringsmakelaar Bruce Baldwin. Burns probeert haar ertoe te overhalen toch nog één interview af te nemen van de terdoodveroordeelde.
