Nadat ze getuige is geweest van de brute gangmoord op haar eerste en enige vriendje besluit de jonge Justice (Janet Jackson) te stoppen met studeren en fulltime kapster te worden. Ze sluit zich af van vrienden en probeert haar depressie te overwinnen door het schrijven van gedichten. Als ze Lucky (Tupac Shakur) leert kennen is ze eerst heel afstandelijk en afwijzend maar heel langzaam leert ze door hem dat ze niet zo alleen is als ze denkt. Na Boyz’n The Hood is Poetic Justice de tweede film van John Singleton over de harde realiteit van het leven in de zwarte wijken van Los Angeles.
