Prot wordt opgenomen in een psychiatrische inrichting en komt onder behandeling van Dr. Fuller. Prot beweert dat hij van de planeet K-PAX komt. Door de overtuigende beschrijving van zijn planeet zonder oorlogen, armoede en verdriet gaan Dr. Fuller en de andere patiënten geloven dat hij misschien wel de waarheid spreekt. Als Prot aankondigt dat hij binnenkort terug zal keren naar K-PAX, willen alle patiënten met hem mee. Dr. Fuller zet zijn carrière en gezinsleven op het spel om Prots ware identiteit en afkomst te achterhalen.
