In een tijd van armoede woont een man alleen op een kleine boerderij diep verscholen in de bossen. Hij beschermt zijn land tegen dieven en voedselverzamelaars met vallen en een geweer. De lange jaren alleen beginnen echter zijn tol te eisen en hij begint de grip op de realiteit te verliezen. Zijn isolement wordt doorbroken door twee bezoekers: Kathryn en haar tienerdochter, Milja. Ze zijn uitgehongerd en wanhopig op zoek naar voedsel. Aanvankelijk is hij terughoudend om iets te delen maar dan krijgt hij het aanbod om een nacht met Milja door te brengen.
